Rethinking the Path to Success: A Message from a GenX-er to the Next Generation:

As I close in on my 30th year in my career, I’ve witnessed dramatic shifts in the professional landscape. My generation was comprised of a group that prized independence, resilience, and especially hard work. We felt we owed our employer gratitude simply to be employed. We climbed the corporate ladder one rung at a time, often waiting on empty promises of that rung being available even though we were already doing the job. The mantra “pay your dues to move up” was drilled into our core.

However, as we stand in the crossroads of yet another evolutionary leap in our work culture and technological advancement, I believe it’s time to retire the notion that the younger generations need to tread the exact path we did to achieve success, simply because that’s the way we did it. As a father who wants a better life for my children, I also want a better journey for those who are entering the workforce or in the early stages of their careers. We must accept that the world today is remarkably different than the one we navigated at the start of our careers. The digital revolution has transformed not only how we work, but also the very nature of work itself. The opportunities today are as diverse as they are complex, and the skill sets required to excel have evolved accordingly. It’s not so much the grind as it is the exploration of innovation and creativity.

It's crucial to acknowledge the challenges faced by younger generations are not lesser, just different. The speed of technological advancement, coupled with global issues like climate change and social inequality, presents a unique set of obstacles and responsibilities. The rise of the gig economy, remote work, and AI have redefined what a successful career path can look like.

Instead of viewing traditional career trajectories as the only route to success, we should encourage adaptability, lifelong learning, passion, and the courage to pursue unconventional paths. We must create psychologically safe environments that foster the advancements we need as a society as well as in our corporate innovations.

To the younger generations, I say this: Your journey might look vastly different from mine, and that's not only okay but necessary. The world needs your fresh perspectives, innovative ideas, and willingness to challenge the status quo.

And to my fellow GenX-ers, let's offer our support, guidance, and understanding to those coming up behind us. Our experiences can serve as valuable lessons, not rigid templates. Let's celebrate the diversity of paths to success in today's ever-changing world.

In conclusion, the measure of our progress isn't just in how well we've navigated our paths, but also in how we light the way for others. As we embrace the future, let's redefine success in a way that values flexibility, innovation, and the collective well-being of our global community.

My life changed forever in 2013 when I married my soulmate, Kristen. We were friends for over a decade before finally dating and rest, as they say, is history. Since then we've been blessed to have 2 amazing daughters who make me strive to be a better person every day. This blog is the culmination of my lessons learned about life, what happiness truly is, and finding your true self along the way.
